SDOC Teacher Forum Scholarship Recipients Honored
The Board recognized the 2025 SDOC Teacher Forum scholarship winners.  These $3,000 scholarships are awarded to a student from each high school that is planning to major in education in college. Mrs. Teena Hunt, current chair of the Teacher Forum, presented the awards to Ellie Lea Gibson from Walhalla High School, Alexis Octavia Wright from West-Oak High School, and William Lucas Harvell from Seneca High School

Weapons Detection Update
Mr. Hanvey provided information on the cost of implementation of metal detectors in SDOC middle and high schools.  Dr. Thorsland and Mr. Hanvey suggested implementing random detection to start the 2025-2026 school year to allow time to plan for daily implementation in the future and for the district to pursue grant funding for more systems.  The board voted to purchase a set of det to begin implementation of random weapons detection in secondary schools early next school year.  You can view more information on SDOC security measures by visiting the    SDOC Safety & Security Overview  page on our website.
 
Budget Information
Mr. Schickling, the district chief finance officer, presented the 2nd reading of the FY26 SDOC budget.  You can view the presentation here:     SDOC FY26 Operating Budget 2nd Reading
The board voted 5-0 to approve the budget as presented on 2nd reading.  The board also voted 5-0 to lower the district capital milage rate by 1.4 mils and to transfer approximately $1.2M from the district general fund balance to capital funds to make up the difference.
